PROJECTION
Michael Brooks with the Italian "Fumeo"16mm (1600watt) pedestal projector and the Chinese portable 35mm (1000watt) projector (background).
We now also screen with a 2500watt "Cinelabor" 16mm pedestal projector which provides optimum and more than ample light output for this format.
SOUND
Sound has been provided from Jan 2005 by a stacked Altec A7 " Voice of the Theatre" speaker system on top of an English Vitavox bass enclosure (circa 1950's).
This is a very large (3 metres high) and (very) heavy vintage speaker system that was the predominant choice in many cinemas around the world for many years. It was specifically designed for movie sound and delivers good clarity of dialogue and richness to mono analogue 16mm and 35mm soundtracks, which in a bygone era, was it's required task in the much larger cinemas than exist today. Power consumption is in the area of 40watts and was designed to be driven by valve amplifiers, and can fill a theatre easily. The speakers used in cinemas today are a refinement of this design and are smaller in size, requiring considerably more power to drive.
This system like all audio systems works well providing source material are of a reliable quality.
We occasionally recive 16mm prints (the only one available for instance) with less than desirable soundtrack due to poor processing and wear. We endeavour with our experience with these sorts of soundtracks, coupled with the clarity of the above system, to provide the best possible results under these circumstances.
About the people behind the society
Michael Brooks established the Society in 2003 with our opening gala in July of that year. Our original venue was Rosalie Hall, Nash Street, until September, 2004, when unfortunately the RSL who had use of the hall since 1946, needed for varying reasons to sell the premises. The hall is now in use as a gymnasium.
His roles in the Society include the technical side in supplying of, and set up of projection and sound equipment, programmer, film print movement, evening co-host and projectionist. Michael originally began hosting and screening 16mm classic films in cafe's and restaurants in 1996. By 2001 he had clocked up over 300 screenings. He also began at this time and still screens films in many varied environments indoors and out.
Karen Vale, Leigh Dillon and Debbie Vale oversee box office, our popular supper (and supplying the array of home baked sweet goodies at interval), publicity, programming, and making the whole front of house thing happen on the screening days. The girls have been involved with the society since early 2005. They share a long time interest in film, classic and contemporary. Karen also co-hosts and supplies at each screening a fascinating display of historical literature and books pertaining to the film being screened.
Prior to this Pierina Curties and Denise Griffin did much of the hard yakka and unfortunately had to give up their valuable contribution to the society in early 2005, just after the move to the Old Museum.
We also rely on the invaluable assistance and enthusiasm of our many volunteers as well, who help out with many and varied aspects on the nights we sceen.
