A rich alcoholic playboy Kyle Hadley heir to the Hadley oil dynasty pursues and marries the girl secretly loved by his hard working best friend who is in turn pursued by Kyles spoiled sister – friends since childhood but turned nymphomaniac out of frustration of his rejection of her.

Adapted from Robert Wilders 1956 potboiler, this is a veritable template for every tawdry soap opera on the big and small screen! However, this hugely entertaining lush, trashy saga runs rings around anything else with it’s breathtaking palette of colour and a camera that is smooth and velvet-like. In this masterful depiction of the effects of wealth on a Southern family, Sirk extracts again the very best out of his players with Robert Stack being nominated and Dorothy Malone winning the coveted “Oscar”. Gorgeous Costumes and not to mention a truly beautiful score makes this not to be missed with a rare Technicolor film print from the National Film and Sound Archive, Canberra!
