THE WOMEN (1939)
Stars Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine, Phyllis Povah, Marjorie Main and more!
Directed by George Cukor. 133mins.
From the Claire Boothe Luce hit play comes this deliciously acidic commentary set in New York’s Park Avenue and it’s society matrons, their romantic entanglements and the gossip that runs like wild-fire when one of their husbands gets lured into the arms of another woman.
“135 women with men on their minds” said the tagline for this film and there isn’t a man in sight! Director George Cukor (The Philadelphia Story, My Fair Lady) was known as “The women’s director” and perfect to be at the helm with this very large roster of MGM female players. Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford who played opposite types of roles for years at MGM, are finally paired in a film and the sparks flew on and off the set! Enter Rosalind Russell finally able to unleash her vast comedic talents after 7 years of playing only straight roles since coming to Hollywood. Other stand outs such a Paulette Goddard as the wise-cracking girl who knows how to handle her men and Mary Boland as the hilarious wealthy heiress always in search of love provide much laughter for the viewer! Also features a special Technicolor fashion sequence with gowns by Gilbert Adrian.
