A Woman’s Face (1941)

Stars Joan Crawford, Melvyn Douglas, Conrad Veidt, Majorie Main, Osa Massen.

Directed by George Cukor. 106 Mins.

Anna Holm is a blackmailer, who because of a facial scar, despises everyone she encounters. When a plastic surgeon performs an operation to correct this disfigurement, Anna becomes torn between the hope of starting a new life, or a return to her dark past.

In a role intended for Greta Garbo, this film is said to surpass even Joan Crawford’s Oscar-winning performance in Mildred Pierce. In her 6 decades on the screen we see in this film depths that she had not reached prior or probably ever again. Cukor, in top form as Hollywood’s “director’s director”, and the champion of many female stars who had worked under his deft hand, discourages any overacting in this highly underrated film! Don’t miss this on the big screen!
